Hookah lounge eyed for slaughterhouse property in Lackawanna

Plans for a hookah lounge and restaurant on Ridge Road will be reviewed Aug. 22 by the Lackawanna Planning and Development Board, said Drew Shapiro, the city's development director.

The site at 174 Ridge formerly held Lackawanna Halal Market. A slaughterhouse remains in operation at the address, Shapiro said.

"I'm not a big proponent of the hookah lounge, especially since there is an existing hookah — Hookahwanna — a block away," said Shapiro. "I'd be more concerned with the restaurant rather than the slaughterhouse. Separate entrances for each business are required."

Hookahwanna opened earlier this year at 283 Ridge in the former Dom Polski social hall.

The planning board will also review a proposal to build a 20-space parking lot for the Lackawanna Islamic Mosque, 154 Wilkesbarre St. The parking lot would be at the corner of Wilkesbarre and Pearl Avenue.

The planning board will meet at 6 p.m. Aug. 22 in Council Chambers, 714 Ridge.
