Hamburg will continue to aid historic cemetery

The Town of Hamburg is continuing its subsidy of Prospect Lawn Cemetery for an eighth year.

The 18.5-acre cemetery on the east and west sides of Gowanda State Road (Route 62) first appealed to the town in 2010, when financial problems surfaced. The cemetery's maintenance fund did not earn much interest and, in a change from years ago, most burial plots are no longer purchased in advance.

The town will pay the cemetery a stipend of $1,500 a month, or $18,000 a year. Under state law, if the cemetery went out of business, the town would be responsible for operating it.

The cemetery is the resting place for two Revolutionary War veterans, as well as veterans from every American conflict.
