Beer news: Big Ditch, Thin Man release new brews

Dr. Oktavius arrives

Thin Man Brewery (492 Elmwood Ave.) will release its new pilsner beer, Dr. Oktavius, on Aug. 25. The 4.7 percent ABV was brewed in collaboration with Widawa, which is the No. 1 rated brewery in Poland. It was brewed with Oktawia hops from Poland. Call 923-4100.

New from Big Ditch

Big Ditch Brewing Company (55 E. Huron St.) will release Beautiful River Belgian at noon Aug. 19. The beer is a farmhouse-style ale, aged in Tommyrotter Distillery bourbon gin barrels. The beer was finished with two kinds of Brettanomyces (wild yeast), and then dry-hopped with Galaxy and Motueka hops. The result is a 6.6 percent ABV (alcohol by volume) complex drink with notes of pear, pepper, hay, oak and tropical fruit.

About 200 16-ounce bottles are available for sale for $14 with a limit of two per customer. One-ounce pours will be available for $1 in the tap room. Call 854-5050.

A Big Tray IPA

Pizza Plant will tap Big Tray IPA (India pale ale) on Aug. 22 at both its Transit (7770 Transit Road) and Canalside (125 Main St.) locations. The beer was brewed at Sierra Nevada Brewing Company (Chico, Calif.) with the help of Dan Syracuse from Pizza Plant as part of its Beer Camp series.

Named for the copious trays of juicy hops added (including El Dorado, Mosaic and Nelson Sauvin), the New England-style IPA also contains some rye in the malt bill to add complexity. Call 632-0800.

Two from Flying Bison

Flying Bison Brewing Company (840 Seneca St.) will release two new beers in bottles next week. Juice Caboose is a 7.5 percent ABV New England-style IPA with a low bitterness, and lots of juicy, citrusy hops including Citra, Ekuanot and Galaxy.

The second is the annual release of the brewery’s Bisonfest (Oktoberfest lager). Bisonfest is 6.3 percent ABV, malt-forward and pairs well with German foods, tailgating and autumn. Call 873-1557.

Yoga and a drink

Five & 20 Spirits and Brewing (8398 W. Main St., Westfield) will host its Patio Yoga from 9 to 10 a.m. Aug. 19 and Sept. 9. The event features a yoga class led by Deb Phillips, paired with a glass of house beer or wine. No experience is required (bring your own mat and props). Attendees must be 21 or older. Strawberry Wheat and BBQ

Four Mile Brewing (202 E. Green St., Olean) has released its newest beer, Strawberry Wheat. This 5.4 percent ABV American wheat ale is made with fresh strawberries which add a sweet, subtle tartness.

Four Mile is holding an IPA chicken barbecue at noon Aug. 25. Meals are $10 and include a half chicken seasoned with a marinade infused with the brewery’s Allegheny IPA. Call 373-2337.

Becker Farms

After many years in the making, Becker Brewing at Becker Farms (3724 Quaker Road, Gasport) is now making its own beer on site. Two beers are set to be released in mid-to-late September: Papi’s Pilsner and The Hunt for Red Oktoberfest.

Both beers are approximately 6 percent ABV and will only be available at the tasting room. Growler fills will also be available. Call 772-2211.
