A federal judge sentenced a Canadian man to time served following a conviction on a gun possession charge, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Monday.
Lawrence Hong, 21, attempted to enter the United States over the Peace Bridge on Jan. 21 when Customs and Border Protection officers found a 9 mm handgun, more than $1,100 in cash as well as Xanax and drug paraphernalia in his vehicle.
Hong initially told authorities he was planning to go shopping in Buffalo, but he couldn't explain why his dog was in the car, prosecutors said. Hong later told authorities he was going to Ohio to buy another gun and that he was a heroin addict undergoing methadone treatment.
He was convicted of possession of a firearm by an unlawful user of a controlled substance.
