When rising rents forced Michael Mulley out of his pint-sized art space on Allen Street in 2015, he took his art to the streets.
Mulley's "Art Under the Stars" event, launched in September of that year, was an effort to remain part of the neighborhood and its monthly gallery walk without owning a physical space.
It was immensely popular, drawing crowds of revelers to a makeshift gallery wall set up on a patch of grass at 64 College St. They came for the art, stayed for the party and lamented the closure of one of the city's great small art spaces. The next year, with bottles of wine and six-packs in hand, they returned to do the same.
Now Mulley's event returns for the third year. Unlike last year, when he built a four-sided cube to showcase more art, the get-together will feature two walls featuring artwork by about 15 local artists. Behind that, there will be a community party featuring live music and refreshments.
"Art Under the Stars": 7 to 10 p.m. Aug. 18 at 64 College St. 868-8183 or queencitygallery.tripod.org.
