Two Buffalo teams survived pool play and have reached the quarterfinals and elimination play of the National Amateur Baseball Federation Major World Series in Battle Creek, Mich.
Orville's allowed its first runs of the tournament and trailed for the first time, but rallied for a 3-2 triumph over Flanagan Associates (Conn.) on Friday to finish pool play with a 3-0 record. Orville's will face a wild-card team, Hackensack Troasts at 2:30 Saturday in the quarterfinals. Garrett Pauly (Hilbert) or Damian Howard (LeMoyne) will get the start for Buffalo.
Tyler Utz (University at Buffalo) and Matt Grace (Niagara Falls High) each had two hits and scored for Buffalo team in Friday's victory. Utz also stole two bases. Lefty Sal Carroccia (Medaille) pitched five innings, giving up three hits and striking out five. Jack Lyman pitched three shutout innings.
Battistoni Diesel, which won the tournament in 2015 and was runner-up last year, suffered the first defeat in six games by the Buffalo teams in the tournament. Diesel finished 2-1 in pool play after a 4-2 win over the New Rochelle Robins before losing to Detroit Jet Box, 8-7. Diesel won its pool with a 2-1 record by virtue of Thursday's 12-0 rout of Hackensack (N.J.) Troasts, who also were 2-1 in pool play. Battistoni also will face a wild-card, defending champion Brooklyn Sports Fever at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
Tim Seil pitched the Diesel victory while Randy Moley, Mike Wagner and B.J. Stack had two hits each and Nick Jasinski's two-run single produced the winning runs. In the loss to Jet Box, Stack and Joe Barbario had two hits each and Neal DeMartin and Wagner drove in two runs each.
