A Rapids Volunteer Fire Department firefighter who saved a man in cardiac arrest has been named the EMS Provider of the Year by the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York.
Brandon Sutton will be recognized Saturday at the 145th annual association convention in Liverpool.
The fire company got a call Sept. 14, 2016, that a 66-year-old man was suffering cardiac arrest in Clarence. Sutton, an EMT, was assigned to an emergency ambulance service vehicle at the time and was less than a mile away from the man's house.
He told family members to continue CPR while he readied the automatic external defibrillator and administered a shock. Other EMTs responded and continued to work on the man, who was shocked once more before he started breathing on his own.
