One of the guiltiest of summer TV's guilty pleasures is the latest season of "Big Brother" on CBS. The show, in which a group of strangers live together in a home under constant surveillance and compete with each other for a chance to win $500,000, has a local twist this year: Mark Jansen of Grand Island is one of the houseguests. This blog will keep readers up to date periodically throughout the summer and track Jansen's prospects for the big payday.
The Upshot: With houseguest Josh in power this week, bad news was coming for Cody and Jessica.
With the second temptation competition, houseguests had to go into a darkened room where they unscrambled letters to help them find a specific item. In this case, they looked for a heart. Cody and Jessica had made a plan to give them the best odds to stay in the house for another week. This plan entailed Cody winning this competition, where Jessica set herself up to come in last place, giving her an automatic shot at competing in and trying to win the Power of Veto.
Although Cody was able to pull off the win, Jessica was not able to hold up her end of the bargain. After Josh chose to put Mark and Elena on the block for eviction, Jessica competed against the two of them, with Josh and Alex in the competition as well.
Despite the ending of the "Den of Temptation," Christmas still had her temptation: the "ring of replacement" power, which allowed her to replace someone who was chosen to compete in the power of veto with herself. Cody and Jessica believed the odds were in their favor when Cody's name was chosen to compete. Christmas shocked the house when she chose to use her ring, replacing herself with Cody and crushing their hopes of safety.
Mark, who was on the block this week, was able to secure the power of veto, keeping him safe for the week. With this, Josh had to name a new nominee. Raven willingly volunteered to sit on the block, knowing she was safe as the target was Jessica. Unbeknownst to Jessica and Cody, Josh's target for the week was not Jessica, but Elena.
But after a spelling bee challenge, Josh knew he needed to get Jessica out of the house. During the live eviction, with a vote of 7-1, Jessica was voted out. In a quick head of household competition where houseguests needed to answer true and false questions about a magic act, Alex was victorious and is the new head of household for the week.
Mark Watch: Mark is in a good position. Although he was sitting next to Elena, the object of his "showmance" on the block this week, he won the Power of Veto competition. With this victory, he was able to take himself off of the block forcing head of household Josh to name a replacement nominee.
To make things even sweeter for Mark, Elena was able to keep herself in the house for another week as well as Jessica was the clear target of everyone in the house and was voted out on Thursday.
What's Next?: It's benchmark time in the Big Brother game. Starting now, the houseguest voted out will not be sent home, but instead will be sent to the "Jury House." This is a secluded house where evicted houseguests will continue to live and play a role in discussing, deciding and voting for the guests they feel deserves to win Big Brother as it approaches the final two contestants.
Mark should feel pretty good entering into this week; although he and Alex have not always seen eye to eye, it is difficult to imagine anyone other than Cody going home.
