A Niagara County man pleaded not guilty in State Supreme Court Wednesday to an indictment that accused him of beating the mother of his child with a baseball bat, choking her and stealing a credit card.
Niagara County Assistant District Attorney Lisa M. Baerhe said Jason E. Evrard, 32, attacked the woman May 26 in his home at the time, on Lockport Road in Wheatfield. Evrard has since moved to Quain Place in the Town of Niagara.
Evrard's record includes a felony animal cruelty conviction for breaking a small dog's pelvis by slamming it to the floor in 2012.
Evrard is charged with assault, criminal obstruction of breathing, criminal possession of a weapon, grand larceny, menacing and criminal mischief. Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr. allowed him to remain free on a $15,000 bail bond.
