Immigrants helped to build our country
My grandparents came to this country not speaking any English or with any job skills. My grandfather became literate, my grandmother sort of. They had a small neighborhood grocery and lived behind it. Their three daughters graduated high school. Their son, my uncle, served in the armed forces during the Second World War, went to college on the GI Bill and became a CPA. Their five grandchildren all graduated college and are part of the American middle class. Not a bad return on these penniless, illiterate immigrants.
My family’s story is not unique!
