Three WNY golfers make cut in State Amateur

Bethpage Black stood up to the test from New York State's best amateur golfers Wednesday. After giving up seven rounds under par-71 on Tuesday, the legendary layout on Long Island gave up only three in the second round Wednesday of the 95th NYSGA Men's Amateur championship.

It was most unkind to the first-round leaders. Gary Barnes of Centennial Golf Club in Carmel was the first day leader with 5-under 66. He shot 75 in his second round and is now tied for sixth.

James Scorse of Churchville, a member at Stafford CC near Batavia, struggled even more. He shot 81 after his 3-under 68 and fell to a tie for 25th.

The new leader is Adam Condello of Locust Hill in Rochester. Condello added a 68 to his opening 69 and is the only player in the 142-man field with two rounds below par. Penn State sophomore Alec Bard (Cedar Lake) is second after a 69 round for  1-under 141.

Again the low man among the Western New York golfers was Sean Lindstrom, who shot 74 for a 146 total, good for a tie for 11th place. Kevin Borowicz (River Oaks), the Buffalo District men's champion, also shot 74 for a 149 and is in a tie for 25th.

The only other WNY golfer making the cut to the low 40 scores plus ties is David Hanes (Crag Burn) with 75-76-151 and a tie for 32nd.

Former champion Jeff Wolniewicz of Crag Burn gained some consolation with a 72 on Wednesday after an opening 84 but short of the cutline of 152.  Gavin Hall of Oak Hill in Rochester, who was third in the 2017 Porter Cup, withdrew after shooting 74 in his first round Daniel Gianniny, the East Aurora Junior Masters champion in June, made the cut with his second straight 74.

Two more 18-hole rounds remain in the tournament.

Other WNY scores: Michael Carrig (Springville) 76-78-154, Jamie Miller (Wanakah) 79-76-155, Mark Lesinski (River Oaks) 79-76-155, Chris Garvey (eClub-WNY) 77-80-`157, Andy Bernatovicz (River Oaks) 75-82-157, Tom Rajczak (eClub-WNY) 77-81-158, Derek Roller (Lancaster) 78-80-158, Kristopher Boyes (Sheridan Park) 84-76-160, Ryan Spady (Lancaster) 83-80-163, Maxon Davis (Wanakah) 85-78-163, Michael Donner (Wanakah) 80-83-163, Kyle Harman (Gowanda) 85-78-163, Andrew Edbauer (Wanakah) 87-79-166, Michael Piccillo (Lancaster) 78-88-166,  Jake Katz (Brookfield) 91-80-171, Paul Hoffstetter (Springville) 87-86-173.
