Staffing issue threatens Grand Island senior meals program

Grand Island will hold a special meeting to discuss staffing the Golden Age Center beginning at 1 p.m. Monday, at Town Hall, 2255 Baseline Road.

Barbara Gannon, executive director, proposed converting a part-time position in the kitchen to full time, splitting the position between the senior and youth departments.

Gannon told the town board on Monday that the kitchen is down from four part-time employees to one and said a full-time position would attract candidates. Gannon said if they don't get a new employee, the senior meals program, which is prepared in-house, could end.

"I did try (to fill the position), but I had 10 or 12 people walk out," said Gannon.

Councilmen Michael Madigan and Christopher Aronica rejected the request on Monday. Both said they needed more information.
