City Hallways (Aug. 9): The struggle for democracy

Putting up a fight

What’s red and yellow and represents the number 8888?

It’s the fighting peacock flag flying outside City Hall.

The banner marks the anniversary of Aug. 8, 1988 – the day protesters in Burma demonstrated and marched to demand democracy and freedom in that country but were met with a brutal crackdown by the military regime.

Thousands reportedly were killed in the suppression, and the day became known as the 8888 Uprising.

Remember that playground that City Hallways wrote about that’s opening up on the East Side near Schiller Park?

It's the brainchild of the Jami Masjid Mosque and the Universal School – an Islamic, faith-based elementary school.

The grand opening of the new playground is today at 5:30 p.m. at the corner of Genesee and Forman streets, on a parking lot on the school's property. There will be a bounce house, hot dogs and family-fun activities.

The new play area will be open to the entire community to enjoy.
