Tonawanda City School Board appoints new high school principal

Michael Brown, assistant high school principal for the past year, was appointed Tonawanda High School principal Tuesday.

Michael Brown was chosen as the new Tonawanda High School principal.

Brown succeeds Jessica Lyons, principal since 2013 and a district employee since 2010. Lyons left to become the East Aurora elementary school principal.

Superintendent Timothy Oldenburg said the hiring committee did an extensive external search before appointing Brown.

Brown, a native of the Southern Tier, graduated with a bachelor's in secondary education from SUNY Geneseo and taught social studies for nine years at Pavilion Central School. He received his master's in secondary education and administration from SUNY at Buffalo.

"I absolutely love the City of Tonawanda community," said Brown, who lives in Cheektowaga with his wife, Marcie, and son, Mason.

His contract will pay an annual salary of $91,000 through 2021.
