A veteran hospitality operator with over 22 hotels in Western New York is proposing a five-story hotel in Cheektowaga.
Jayesh R. Patel, owner of Cheektowaga-based Rudra Management and Rosewood Hotels, is seeking Cheektowaga Planning Board approval to build a 112-room Holiday Inn Hotel at 5050 Genesee St., just west of Transit Road. Plans for the hotel, to be built on 3.9 acres of vacant land, call for a pool, a fitness center, a banquet room for up to 80 people and parking for up to 144 cars.
Patel paid $1 million for the land last week, according to a deed filed with the clerk's office. An affiliate of his company, along with Bella Vista Group, had previously targeted the site in 2009 for a pair of four-story hotels. If approved at the board's Aug. 9 meeting, Patel said he hopes to break ground in the fall, and the project is expected to be finished in 2018.
Patel owns 45 other hotels in Western New York, Rochester and Syracuse, as well as in markets in Bradford, Pa.; Rome, Ga.; and Baltimore. He is converting the former Dunlop Tire headquarters building on Grand Island into a mixed-use project, with a Holiday Inn Express.
However, there's still "lots of uncertainty" with that project, Patel said, citing problems with sewer approvals and other factors that are delaying the opening at least until December if not beyond.
