Driver, 85, dies after car strikes pole in Niagara Falls

An 85-year-old Niagara Falls man died Monday night after a one-car crash near the intersection of Hyde Park Boulevard and College Avenue, city police said.

The man, who may have suffered a medical problem just before the crash, was heading west on Witmer Road and crossing Hyde Park when he struck a railroad signal control box and then railroad tracks before going airborne and hitting a utility pole, Niagara Falls police said.

The driver, whose name was not released, was transported to Mount St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The crash, which happened at about 10:30 p.m., remains under investigation.
