Work started Monday to improve the safety at the intersection of Route 5 and Bayview Access Road in the Town of Hamburg, said Matthew J. Driscoll, commissioner of the state Department of Transportation.
The $1.3 million project will close the Bayview Access Road crossover in the median between the eastbound and westbound lanes of Route 5 to eliminate cut-through traffic to Bayview Road.
Hoover Road will be realigned to meet Route 5 across from Lake Erie Boulevard (the access road linking FedEx Ground Transport distribution center to Route 5). It will create a four-corner intersection. The north portion of Hoover Road will be connected to the realigned Hoover Road to provide access to the industrial area.
The accident rate at the intersection is more than 13 times the statewide rate for similar intersections, according to the state DOT.
"The combination of speed and volume at the median has made that a dangerous intersection for some time now and the site of too many accidents," said State Sen. Chris Jacobs, R-Buffalo. "The changes underway will not only improve traffic flow, but significantly improve safety as well.”
Work is expected to be done by winter.
