Kevin Borowicz of Grand Island shot a 73 on Saturday in the final round and won the Buffalo District Golf Association men's individual stroke play championship at the Niagara Frontier Country Club in Youngstown.
The former Niagara Frontier League star at Grand Island High who attends the University of Central Florida edged Ben Reichert of Williamsville by one stroke, 184-185, in the what turned out to be a 45-hole tournament because Friday's second round was limited to nine holes because of weather. Both Borowicz and Reichert are members at River Oaks.
With his lead narrowed to one stroke after he had bogeys on Nos. 15 and 16, the 21-year-0ld Borowicz made a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 17. That proved to be the difference. The victory qualified Borowicz for the New York State Amateur which will open Tuesday at Bethpage Black on Long Island.
Borowicz was tied with John Dantonio of Lancaster at 111 for 27 holes entering the final round. Reichert was two strokes back at 113. Reichert shot 1-over-par 72 for his last round.
Dantonio finished third with an 78 for a 189 total.
Victoria Parker, a former star at Sacred Heart Academy and now a sophomore at Coast Carolina University, shot a final round 75 to go with a 38 on Friday to win the Women's District title with a 113 total. That was three strokes better than Sydney Shaw of Orchard Park (35-81-116).
