A mother of three children was fatally beaten during a fight on Niagara Street and her family wants to know who is responsible.
Police did not name the woman, but family members identified her as 39-year-old Jessica Garcia of the Marina Vista apartments on Hertel Avenue. Garcia leaves three daughters, ages, 16, 18 and 22.
The oldest daughter, Yessena Echevarria, started a Go Fund Me page to help the family with funeral expenses.
On the page she writes, "My mother passed away August 2nd as a result of a violent altercation. My family is praying for justice."
Police said the woman suffered injuries during a fight on the 800 block of Niagara Street and was taken to the hospital, where she died.
"Detectives said she was involved in a fight Aug. 1," said Michael J. DeGeorge, spokesman for the Buffalo Police Department. "Later that night she was taken by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center. She died on Wednesday at the hospital."
Garcia's death has been ruled a homicide, DeGeorge said, adding, "The incident remains under investigation."
Brunielda Riveras, a friend of the family, said that Garcia had been savagely beaten and was kicked several times in the head during the assault, which Riveras said involved several attackers.
The family still is unsure why Garcia was attacked and is asking for people with information about the incident to contact police, she said.
"If people were to see a flier of the three young girls left without a mother, maybe someone would come forward," Riveras said.
