Former Cheektowaga resident Liz Johnson had the lead after the qualifying sessions of the United States Women’s Open on Friday, but then slipped to third place after the first round of match play later in the day.
Johnson went 4-4 in the head-to-head bowling competition, and finished the day with a pinfall of 9,264. She is certainly within striking distance of the leader, Jodi Woessner of Oregon, Ohio, who is at 9,297. Daria Pajak of Poland moved into second place with 9,277 in the event, which is taking place in Plano, Texas.
Johnson, who now lives in Deerfield, Ill., had a 41-pin lead after the qualifying rounds. She is the defending champion, and is hoping to win her sixth U.S. Open championship.
Two more rounds of match play will take place on Saturday, with the stepladder final set for Sunday afternoon.
