A woman who drove her minivan into a pond in the Town of North Collins was arrested on a felony driving while intoxicated charge early Friday morning by Erie County Sheriff's Office deputies.
At 4:41 a.m., deputies were dispatched to Sisson Highway and Shirley Road after receiving calls about a car stuck in a pond. Deputies found Sonya Gelster, 37, of Boston, smoking a cigarette in the driver's seat of her partially submerged vehicle while it was being rescued from the pond by North Collins Fire Company firefighters, the sheriff's office said. Once Gelster was ashore, deputies detected a strong smell of alcohol on her.
After refusing to take a breathalyzer, Gelster was arrested on six charges, the sheriff's office said. She was being held at the Erie County Holding Center pending her arraignment in North Collins Town Court.
