Hundreds of people are expected to attend an outdoor mass that Buffalo Catholic Diocese Bishop Richard J. Malone will celebrate at 10 a.m. Sunday at St. John XXIII Catholic Church, the former St. William Church site, 1 Arcade St. at Harlem Road, West Seneca.
The parish, which is observing the 60th anniversary of the current church building, has a long history of outdoor masses. A former pastor, Monsignor Francis Growney, began saying outdoor masses for the ill and aged in 1937. An outdoor altar, Mount Calvary, will be used for Sunday's mass.
As part of the diocesan restructuring plan in 2008, St. William merged with St. Bonaventure Parish in West Seneca and the new parish was formed.
