Clarence town board plans a moratorium on wireless microcell towers

The Clarence Town Board will hold a public hearing and vote on a six-month moratorium on wireless communication systems at 6 p.m. Aug. 9 at One Town Place.

Supervisor Patrick Casilio said the town was notified by the county that Verizon is putting a new micro antenna on Shimerville Road near the Brookfield Country Club – the pole and housing is almost 41 feet, which is 10 feet higher than existing poles in that area.

Casilio said the town has no local law governing micro communications systems and he wants to impose a moratorium until a new law is in place. He said the town's concern is protecting views in places where there are no towers.

The moratorium would only apply to microcell towers. The town already has imposed restrictions on larger telecommunication towers.

The board plans to reach out to other towns for recommendations.
