Three local students and volunteer firefighters awarded scholarships

The Firemen's Association of the State of New York awarded the Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarship and $1,500 each, to three local students for their volunteer work at local fire companies.

Amelia Rockwell of Clarence Center was recognized for her volunteer work at the Harris Hill Volunteer Fire Company earlier this summer.

Amelia said her grandfather was a part of the Clarence Center Volunteer Fire Department in the 1960s. Amelia, who plans to attend Allegheny College in the fall, said she plans to pursue a career in fire investigation or law enforcement.

MaryElisabeth Rustowicz of Grand Island volunteered at the Grand Island Fire Company earlier this summer. She plans to attend Niagara University in the fall and major in childhood education and adolescent English.

Simon Dietrich of South Wales volunteered at the South Wales Fire Company and plans to attend Virginia Military Institute and major in mechanical engineering.
