'Say Yes' Dorm Room Drive helps neediest students

A Dorm Room Drive is currently under way to benefit Buffalo students heading to college this fall on a Say Yes Buffalo scholarship.

The annual drive – first launched in 2016 by Say Yes to Education in partnership with State Sen. Tim Kennedy, D-Buffalo – provides some of the neediest Say Yes students with necessities  to continue their higher education. The drive is necessary because despite getting free college tuition, about half the students receiving a Say Yes scholarship have a combined family income below $25,000.

Some of the supplies needed include laundry soap and laundry baskets; personal care items, like shampoo, soap, toothpaste and towels; bedding; and school supplies, like pens, notebooks, folders, binders and heavy-duty backpacks.

Kennedy and the Say Yes teamed up with the Buffalo Bisons to collect school supplies at the July 27 game at Coca-Cola Field. Donations can also be dropped off at Kennedy's office, 2239 South Park Ave., and at the Say Yes office, 712 Main St.; as well as several other locations including City Hall; the North Buffalo Community Center; Rich Products; Larkin Square; Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo and the Buffalo Urban League.
