Back in the spring, City Hallways reported about a new playground that is being constructed on Buffalo's East Side.
The Jami Masjid Mosque and the Universal School – an Islamic, faith-based elementary school – are building the new playground at the corner of Genesee and Forman streets, on a parking lot on the school's property.
The playground will be open to the entire community. The grand opening is next week with a BBQ, a bounce house and other family-friendly activities.
Volunteers were at the site last weekend helping to construct the new play area.
Funds were raised for the $80,000 project, which won a $10,000 grant from the KIND Foundation, a nonprofit started by KIND Healthy Snacks.
Every month the foundation invites organizations to submit ideas for funding consideration. The community votes for the cause that inspires them the most. The foundation also encourages each voter to commit to doing a kind act in his or her own life.
The Universal School's proposal – "Give Play a Chance" – focused on building a playground that would give kids and neighbors a safe place to gather and play. The submission received 2,535 votes and was the winner for the month of April.
Stay tuned for more information on the playground's grand opening.
City Hallways is taking a very brief break and will be back on Thursday. Be sure to check back then.
