Liz Johnson, the winner of the last three U.S. Women's Open tournaments, stood in 17th place Tuesday after the first round of qualifying for the 2017 championship in Plano, Texas.
The Niagara Falls native now living in Deerfield, Ill., totaled 1,775 pins for her eight games in the first of four rounds of qualifying before match play begins. She started with a 267, but soon fell off the pace with a 175 in her second game. She finished the round with games of 214, 228 and 245 to climb from 22nd place.
Kristina Szczerbinski of North Tonawanda was in 103rd place after she bowled 1,496 (187 average).
Liz Kuhlkin of Schenectady shot 1,870 (233.75) in the final squad to take the first day lead.
