Woman extradited from Poland to face fraud charges in Buffalo

A Canadian woman has been returned to Buffalo from Poland to face charges of bank fraud in federal court.

Panagiota Loukisas, 56, of North York, Ontario, is accused of depositing more than $83,000 into accounts opened at five Niagara Falls banks, then withdrawing more than $52,000 before it was discovered the accounts held insufficient funds, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth R. Moellering.

Loukisas was arraigned Friday in federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeremiah J. McCarthy, after being named in a five-count indictment charging her with bank fraud, according to Acting U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy Jr.

Loukisas is being held pending a detention hearing Aug. 7.
