Type of ride that killed teen in Ohio not likely to be at Erie County Fair

The same type of amusement ride that malfunctioned and caused a death at the Ohio State Fair had been slated to come to the Erie County Fair, but the James E. Strates Shows probably won't bring it here.

Strates operated the ride, the Fire Ball, at the Nassau Coliseum but voluntarily shut it down after learning of the accident Wednesday, said John Strates, director of operations for the carnival midway. The state Labor Department ordered it closed shortly after that, and the manufacturer has directed all owners to discontinue use of the ride until an investigation into the cause of the death, he said.

"What happened in Ohio is an anomaly," Strates said. "It's catastrophic. It's very bad."

He said Strates has run the Fire Ball "for years" without a problem, but probably would not bring it to the Erie County Fair that starts Aug. 9.
