Lockport breaks ground for new YMCA

YMCA Buffalo Niagara leaders and local elected officials broke ground Friday for the new $17 million Lockport Family YMCA at 5833 Snyder Drive in the Town of Lockport.

The new 52,000-square-foot building, targeted to open in October 2018, will include a full-size gymnasium, an indoor running track, a six-lane swimming pool, two exercise studios, a steam room, a children's "adventure center" and three locker rooms.

The new facility will replace a YMCA location on East Avenue in the City of Lockport which has been operating since 1926. There are no definite plans for reuse of that structure, but the YMCA intends to sell it.

The project was funded through a $10 million capital campaign that lasted more than a decade and tax-exempt bonding authorized this year by the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency.
