Marcel Brooks has been sentenced to 15 years in prison and five years post-release supervision, for causing serious injuries to a toddler in his care,.
Brooks, 26, pleaded guilty in June to one count of first-degree assault. He was caring for his girlfriend's 22-month-old nephew on Oct. 5 in the 2600 block of Sheridan Drive in the Town of Tonawanda, according to the Erie County District Attorney's Office.
Brooks shook the child, who was diagnosed with swelling on the brain and spinal cord injuries, police said at the time.
While the boy's condition has improved, he is not expected to make a full recovery, officials said. State Supreme Court Justice M. William Boller also issued an order of protection that prohibits Brooks from having contact with the child until Jan. 10, 2045.
