'Zombie home' to be demolished in Williamsville

A "zombie home" in the Village of Williamsville that has been a nuisance to neighbors will be demolished, the Village Board decided this week.

The home at 96 S. Long St., south of the Lehigh Memorial Trail, has been the subject of numerous complaints from residents about rats and the tattered tarp covering the roof, said Mayor Brian J. Kulpa.

A "zombie home" is a vacant property stuck in an incomplete foreclosure that can bring down neighboring property values as it deteriorates.

"It's the very definition of 'zombie home,' " Kulpa said. "I'm glad we're finally at this point."

The owner in May was ordered to commence demolition within 60 days, but it hasn't happened. The village will undertake the demolition and seek repayment for the costs.
