Elderly man missing four days found safe in woods near his home

A 79-year-old man who went missing Friday was found Tuesday in a wooded area near his home in the area of Parker Boulevard in the Town of Tonawanda, police said.

Harold Roberts, a retired Air Force pilot, told Town of Tonawanda police he used his military survival skills to stay alive. Investigators believe Roberts wandered into the wooded area and fell, unable to get up or call for help.

Police said they believe Roberts was in the wooded area, located adjacent to a bike path near his home, the whole time he was missing.

Authorities credited the work of Detective Darren Hearitt, who found Roberts, saying Roberts may have died from exposure or dehydration if not for the detective's work.

Roberts was taken to an area hospital for evaluation "but was in good spirits when located," police said.
