William Geary Jr. is Erie County's new Department of Public Works commissioner.
Geary has served as deputy commissioner of the department's Highway Division since 2012. He replaces Charles Sickler, the interim commissioner after former Commissioner John Loffredo retired in January. He will earn an annual salary of $131,317 in his new position.
“Bill Geary is a great choice for commissioner, a conscientious and detail-oriented worker whose experience and knowledge of the department make him a perfect fit for the post," Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz said.
The County Legislature is expected to confirm his appointment. Geary is a decorated Air Force Reservist and previously served as the county's senior highway maintenance engineer from 2008-2012. His promotion had been held up for months because county law requires the commissioner to hold a professional engineering license, which Geary does not have. The Legislature temporarily lifted the requirement so he could be appointed.
