Grand Island house burglar jumps from window, lands in cacti, deputies report

A burglar made a hard landing in his escape from a window at Grand Island home Wednesday afternoon, Erie County Sheriff's deputies reported.

He landed "face-first in a row of cacti plants," deputies said.

While investigating the report of a suspicious vehicle on Harvey Road with two males inside at about 1:30 p.m., authorities found signs someone had entered a house, deputies said.

Outside the home, a detective and a sheriff's deputy encountered one man, who ran toward the front of the house, where another deputy confronted him. The man then ran inside, chased by a deputy who broke down the front door. As the deputy pursued him, the man jumped through a window and landed on the cacti, deputies said.

The man, wearing a black ski mask and knit gloves, was then handcuffed, deputies said.

Another intruder was found in the basement of the home and he surrendered, authorities said. He was found wearing a dust mask and knit gloves.

Matthew Vaughn, 27, of Niagara Falls, was charged with burglary, grand larceny, resisting arrest and criminal mischief. He was being held at the Erie County Holding Center in lieu of $75,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond.

Jeremy Cyphers, 23, also of Niagara Falls, was charged with burglary, grand larceny and criminal mischief. He was being held in lieu of $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond.
