Bienvenido. Herzlich willkommen. Benvenuto.
These are just a few ways to say welcome in different languages.
But a new mural on the side of a building in the Fillmore District was painted with 13 languages to make people feel really welcome.
“Welcome Wall” is the name of the artwork. It was designed and installed by two Philadelphia-based artists – Keir Johnston and Ernel Martinez.
It incorporates the word welcome in various languages to celebrate the multicultural neighborhood surrounding it. There’s Arabic, Bengali, Burmese, English, Farsi, French, German, Polish, Seneca, Spanish, Somali, Urdu and Vietnamese.
The mural was painted on the side of 751 Fillmore Ave., which has been vacant for more than 20 years.
It’s near the intersection of Broadway and Fillmore Avenue and is part of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery's Public Art Initiative.
