Reddy Bike is offering a promotion through the rest of the biking season, which ends in November.
Memberships are half price. The special is in honor of the bikes' one-year anniversary.
Online at reddybikeshare.socialbicycles.com, use the promo code BUFFALOBYBIKE2017, and you will receive a 50 percent discount.
Portland, Ore., is also celebrating a one-year anniversary. The programs began at the same time, said Jennifer White, the Buffalo program's marketing director.
"It's been exciting to be on par with the city of Portland, which is a biking mecca," White said.
Bike sharing is growing organically, with organizers playing it largely by ear. White said Buffalo has been in touch with Portland and other cities trying out the system.
"What's great about the bike sharing community is that this is a new trend everywhere," she said. "No particular city has figured out the perfect way to run it."
So far, things in Buffalo are going well.
"One of the things that surprised us was how much people really embraced this. There are so many people that are starting to use the bikes to get to work. We have a very established base of annual members. They live downtown or around the city, or they choose to ride the bikes instead of driving and parking. It's convenient, easy, and affordable. It's a win for everyone."
Reddy Bikes have an established membership base of 4,000 riders, White said, many of whom own their own bikes.
"We have the ability to make this program very flexible," she said. "We want to make it work for the people who want to use it. It's a supplement to your transportation scheme. It's an addition.
"Honestly, I challenge you to ride these bikes just once and never want to use them again."
