Melanie Green, the Section VI scholastic champion, stands alone in second place after Tuesday's first 18-hole round of the New York State Golf Association Junior Girls Championship at Seven Oaks Golf Club in Hamilton.
Green, the PrepTalk Player of the Year as a freshman at Medina High, shot 1-over 73. She is two strokes in back of the leader, Bailey Shoemaker of the NYSGA eClub-CNY.
Matt Genaway of Darien Center, who plays out of the Attica Golf Club, is the leader in the Boys Junior Amateur at 1-under 71. Genaway will be a freshman at Canisius College after graduating from Alexander Central. He is a two-time Section V scholastic champion.
Nolan Codd of the NYSGA eClub-WNY is tied for fourth with 1-over 73.
Zac Boyes of the Brighton Golf Club in the Town of Tonawanda shot 6-over 78 to stand alone in fifth place in the Sub-Junior tournament for boys 14 and under. Luke Sample of New York City is the Junior Boys leader with at even-par 72.
The three tournaments, being run concurrently at Seven Oaks, will wrap up with a final round of medal play today.
Green, who finished third in the New York State Public High Schools Association championship, had an adventure of a round. She had only seven pars in a round that included five bogeys and three birdies.
Genaway, who started on the 10th hole, shot 2-under 34 on his first nine. A bogey on No. 8 left him 1-over coming in.
