Paperwork filed Tuesday morning with the Town of Cheektowaga confirmed Walden Avenue as the proposed site of Chick-fil-A, an Atlanta-based chain of restaurants with 2,000 locations across the country, said Supervisor Diane Benczkowski.
The 4,975-square-foot restaurant would be built on the site of the former Famous Dave's Barbecue at 1753 Walden Ave. It would be the first location of the Atlanta-based fast food chain in the area.
"The proposal includes demolition of a the existing structure and construction of a 99-seat restaurant with outdoor patio seating for 16, and a drive-thru," said Benczkowski. "It's great that they are taking over and demolishing an old vacant building."
The Buffalo News reported in June that Chick-fil-A would open its first location in Western New York at the Walden Avenue site and was also scoping a second location on Transit Road near Maple Road in Amherst.
This marks at least the third chain that selected Cheektowaga to break into the local market. Sonic Drive-In opened on Union Road across from Cheektowaga Central High School in November 2015; Qdoba established its presence in Erie County on Walden Avenue across from the Walden Galleria in May 2016.
Locals wanting a Chick-fil-A fix were driving to the closest location in Erie, Pa.
In addition to its signature chicken sandwich served with two pickles on a toasted buttered roll, the restaurant will offer gluten-free options.
