Tips lead to arrest of suspect in Grand Island gas station robbery

Tips to the Crimestoppers tipline led to the arrest of a Buffalo man in the July 14 armed robbery of a Grand Island gas station, Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard said Monday.

Michael Church, 39, was arrested July 21 on charges of first-degree robbery, a felony and misdemeanor menacing and petit larceny counts.

A little after 10 p.m. July 14, Crimestoppers reported, a man entered a Mobil gas station at 1837 Love Road. Displaying a black handgun, he demanded cash and was given an unspecified amount by the clerk.

After a $1,000 reward was offered, sheriff's officials said, Crimestoppers received numerous tips which led detectives to a possible suspect in Buffalo. Investigators executed a search warrant at Church's home on Military Road. During the search, detectives said they discovered evidence that allegedly connects Church to the Grand Island armed robbery.
