NY Junior Golf: Junior Masters champion is a challenger

Christian Chapman of Ravenwood Golf Club in Victor will try to defend his title and East Aurora Junior Masters champion Daniel Gianniny will be a leading challenger when the 77th New York State Boys Junior Championship opens today at Seven Oaks Golf Club in Hamilton. The Junior Boys tournament will run concurrently with the Sub-Junior and Junior Girls tournaments. The tournaments will wind up on Wednesday.

Gianniny of the Country Club of Rochester won the Junior Masters last month at the East Aurora Country Club.

Chapman, who is headed for the University of Delaware, won the title last year by one stroke over Nathan Han of Somers.

Also in the Junior Boys field is Jude Cummings of Locust Hill in Rochester, the 2016 New York State Boys Sub-Junior champion. Lindsay May of Auburn, last year's Junior Girls champion, will not defend because she is competing in the U.S., Girls Junior Amateur in August, Mo. next week.

Among several Western New York entrants in the boys tournaments are Matthew Pawlak (Transit Valley), Jake Roach (East Aurora), Kole Maytum (Chautauqua), Matthew Mouad (CC Buffalo), Matt Genaway (Attica), Ryan Hart (CCB), Simon Markowitz (Glen Oaks), Luke Stanley (eClub-WNY), Andrew LaCongo (East Aurora), Cary Ignaczak (eClub-WNY), Brian Beck (Springville), Mitch Jeffe (East Aurora), Matt Jeffe (East Aurora), Matthew Jackson (East Aurora), Tyler Birdd (East Aurora), Jacob Dantonio (Fox Valley), Owen Rooney (e-Club-WNY), Zac Boyes (Brighton), John King(Brookfield), Mason Besant (Lancaster).

WNY entrants in the Junior Girls are: Melanie Green (Shelridge), Madeline Catalano (Niagara Falls CC), Amanda Gaffney (Brookfield), Emily Kase (Tan Tara), Elena Lopez (Crag Burn), Simone Riter (eClub-WNY), Carly Riter (eClub-WNY).
