No candidate for mayor will receive backing from the Buffalo Central Labor Council this year.
A knowledgeable source within the organization who asked not to be identified said Monday that the influential labor group affiliated with the AFL-CIO will not support incumbent Byron W. Brown nor challengers Mark J.F. Schroeder and Betty Jean Grant in the September Democratic primary. The source noted that a vote among organization delegates a few days ago failed to produce the two-thirds-plus-one majority needed for backing.
The move – expected to be officially announced on Tuesday – is seen as significant because the organization often contributes substantial dollars, phone banks and manpower for endorsed candidates.
Schroeder earlier this month was endorsed by the Buffalo Police Benevolent Association, which has contributed $5,000 to his campaign. He was the only candidate to seek its backing.
