Jet skiers, boaters warned to stay away from power intakes in Upper Niagara

After nearly a dozen incidents involving boats and jet skis near the New York Power Authority intake valves in less than two months, the New York State Park Police are  warning these operators that they could face federal charges for operating in a restricted zone.

Despite  warning buoys and signage that operators are in a federally restricted exclusionary zone, boaters and jet skiers have continued to ignore the warnings, resulting in nine incidents between May 29 and July 16, according to the New York State Parks Police.

These operators in the Upper Niagara River are responsible for knowing the area that they are operating in, being aware of natural and man-made hazards, and reviewing navigation charts prior to entering an area they are unfamiliar with, according to State Parks police. Violators will face charges for entering this restricted space by either state or federal authorities.
