The Lockport Housing Authority and Buffalo Geothermal LLC of Cheektowaga are receiving an award for their installation of a geothermal heating and cooling system at the Autumn Gardens apartment complex on East High Street.
The equipment, installed in 2015, replaced an electric heating system in the 72-unit complex that dated from 1972. The system provides year-round climate control and all the domestic hot water for the apartments. State and federal grants aided the project.
The honor is the Geothermal Top Job Award, given by the New York Geothermal Energy Organization. The Lockport project, which reduced energy use at the complex by 40 percent, beat out the geothermal conversion of St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City for the honor.
