A state agency invited developers Wednesday to submit proposals for mixed-use buildings on two parcels at Canalside near the ice-skating canal and coming Explore & More Children's Museum.
While all proposals will be considered, the request notes that retail and/or restaurants – preferably locally owned – are envisioned on the ground level, with residential and office space on the upper floors.
“This is an invitation for both small and large developers to create a neighborhood feel at Canalside with restaurants and entertainment venues on the street level, and residential on the floors above," said Robert Gioia, the waterfront agency's chairman.
As an incentive, the state will provide $2 million for reconstructed streets and other required infrastructure. Proposals are due by Oct. 5 to Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp.
The two parcels on the approximately half acre site are located across Main Street from One Canalside and the HarborCenter. The parcels are bounded on the north by the new canal, on the east by Main Street, on the west by Lloyd Street and the south by Canal Street/Marine Drive. The site is split into two parcels by the former Prime Slip right-of-way.
