The security guards at City Hall will be around for a second year.
The Common Council likely will renew the contract with a private security company to provide uniformed, armed guards at City Hall through June 2018. The price tag is around $660,000.
The guards do more than guide visitors through metal detectors and run bags through X-ray screening. In their first year on duty, they found and confiscated switchblades, brass knuckles, tasers and shanks, said Lt. Jeff Rinaldo.
They also can detain a person carrying narcotics other than marijuana.
They can make arrests for crimes in their presence, but they have to call the police department to take over arrest procedures.
And in the interest of public safety, the guards do not pursue a detained person who flees because they are not law enforcement, Rinaldo said.
The Council is expected to approve the contract next week.
The vendors for this week's Food Truck Thursdays are:
- House of Munch
- Cheesy Chick
- Gourm-Asian Bistro
- Street Cafe
- Louisiana Cookery
- Ted's Hot Dogs
- Sweet Melody's
- Healthy Scratch
The trucks will be stationed on West Genesee Street next to Statler Towers.
