A man who beat up his girlfriend in a Royalton barn last year, leaving her with a fractured skull and bleeding in her brain, was sentenced Wednesday to five years on probation.
Nicholas Galante, 26, of Penwood Drive, Cheektowaga, blamed drugs and alcohol for the incident. He isn't allowed to use those substances as part of the conditions of probation, and State Supreme Court Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr. ordered Galante to wear an alcohol-monitoring device for a year.
Galante could have been sent to prison for as long as seven years after he pleaded guilty to second-degree assault in connection with the June 21, 2016 fight, which attorneys on both sides said began with the woman laying hands on Galante first. In a presentencing report to Kloch, an Erie County probation officer recommended a probation sentence.
