It's been almost two months since anchor Scott Levin left WGRZ-TV (Channel 2) and sports director Adam Benigni has primarily taken his role alongside co-anchor Maryalice Demler.
However, there hasn't been any decision on whether Benigni will be permanently named to the job as the Buffalo Bills season and the new TV season nears in September.
Normally, you would expect a decision would be made before Bills training camp – which opens in a week and is prime time for a sports director – and the start of the fall TV season.
But Channel 2 General Manager Jim Toellner doesn't seem to be in any hurry to decide if Benigni is the answer.
In an email exchange, Toellner wrote, "thanks for your question, but we do not comment on pending personnel situations as you know." He added there is "no timetable to share."
Benigni shared some information.
"I can say that I've been told I will continue anchoring news indefinitely," he wrote in a text message. "As of now, I don't plan on covering training camp."
It is hard to read the tea leaves. You might think the longer Benigni is doing the job temporarily, the more likely he will be given it permanently.
But that didn't work out for Channel 4 morning anchor Brittni Smallwood, who was a temporary co-anchor on "Wake Up!" for about 11 months before the station hired a new anchor, Melanie Orlins.
