Uniland Development Co.'s planned $11 million hotel at Amherst's Northtown Center complex is moving closer to reality with two steps forward.
First, the State Legislature last month approved the swap that removes the parkland designation from the proposed hotel site, 3 acres at the town-owned ice rink complex on Amherst Manor Road, and transfers it to a 26.6-acre parcel of wooded, town-owned land between North French and Casey roads in the East Amherst Conservation Area. The "alienation" legislation still must be sent to the governor.
Next, the town has applied to rezone the 3 acres where the Hampton by Hilton hotel would be built from recreation conservation to general business. Uniland envisions building a four-story, 105-room hotel and 115 parking spaces. The Amherst Planning Board could take up the request in August.
The Town Board would have the final say on the rezoning, and the project also would be subject to environmental review.
