City Hallways (July 18): Joe Dash and a tale of two businesses

Déjà vu all over again?

Supermarket retailer Joe Dash converted the former Budwey’s supermarket at 400 Kenmore Ave. into a self-storage facility despite significant opposition from neighbors who wanted another grocery store at the location.

But he apparently resolved the concerns because the self-storage facility – which is located in Council Member Rasheed Wyatt’s University District – is now open.

Now Dash is planning to build a new, state-of-the-art supermarket in North Buffalo. He had faced similar opposition from neighbors of this proposal to construct a 47,550-square-foot on Hertel Avenue in Council Member Joel Feroleto’s Delaware District.

But after some reconsideration on his part, it seems Dash is faring a bit better with the opposition – just as he did with the former Budwey’s supermarket on Kenmore Avenue.
